The person behind the lens

My passion for photography led me to pursue a degree in the field at university, in which I began to learn and expand my skills while also deciding on my preferred specialization. In recent years I have closely worked and collaborated with various fashion brands, which has allowed me to gain more experience, as well as expand my skill set and knowledge within the industry.

Born and raised in Perth, my photography journey began at the age of 15 when my mum gave me my first camera. From that moment on, I carried that camera with me everywhere, eager to capture the world through my lens. I soon realised my passion for portraiture—the way a photograph could unveil something intimate and unique about the subject.

After I graduate, I aim to explore the world and pursue a career as a photojournalist. My passion lies in capturing diverse cultures and individuals, using photography as a tool to narrate stories, inform, and influence viewers. Further down the track, I envision the possibility of curating my own exhibition, showcasing a collection of my work from my travels as a photojournalist. The moment I realized I wanted to become a photojournalist occurred during my time at university while taking a class dedicated to photojournalism. During the class, we were tasked with producing a short video on any topic of our choice. I chose to document the struggles of my mum battling stage 4 cancer. Throughout this experience, I discovered my passion for capturing the stories of others and giving them a voice. My mother sadly passed away a couple of months later, but knowing I have a video of her strength and resilience serves as my driving force to pursue a career as a photojournalist.

The artists/photographers who have shaped and influenced my photography include Shirin Neshat, Tamara Dean and Abdul Abdullah. Despite their distinct styles, they all share a common purpose – to shed light on and raise awareness of global issues. Their work provokes viewers to walk away with a deeper understanding and a fresh perspective. For example, artists Abdullah and Neshat utilise their art to challenge societal perceptions of Islam. While Dean’s work reflects her deep concerns about climate change and its damaging impact on nature.  Each one of these artists has played a crucial part in shaping my style and approach to photography. Their boldness in creating work that challenges and confronts viewers is what I aim to embody in my own artistic journey.
