“I feel like a conductor and the audience's feelings are my instruments. I will be like, 'laugh, laugh, now be horrified'. When someone does that to me I've had a good time at the movies.”

-Quentin Tarantino-

Breakfast at the Pines is a gripping dark comedy that follows Peter, a seemingly ordinary young man, known by his neighbourhood to be a quiet but friendly neighbour. He faithfully tends to his lawn every Sunday, helps out his 77-year-old widowed neighbour, Fran, with the groceries and the gardening, and every morning, like clockwork, he reads the newspaper with his morning coffee on the front patio. However, little do people know that behind closed doors, Peter harbours a sinister secret.

While designing my movie poster, I drew inspiration from the visual aesthetic of Quentin Tarantino’s style, combined with influence from the TV series End of the F***ing World. I utilised a wide-angle shot within a forest setting to create a foreboding atmosphere. The image portrays a sinister yet comical scene of a serial killer and his latest victim. The juxtaposition of the man peacefully eating his sandwich amidst the presence of a freshly buried grave and a dead body in the trunk of the car, adds a darkly ironic twist to the scene. The presence of the deer peacefully walking through the forest, seemingly indifferent to the killer's actions, suggests that the deer does not perceive an immediate threat from the man who just committed an “animalistic” crime. This portrayal suggests a primal aspect of the man’s character and perhaps underlines the irony of the situation. To enhance the comical element, I utilised pops of colour, such as red and bright yellow to create a striking contrast against the backdrop of the forest. I also utilised an iconic bold and vibrant 3D font for the title, inspired by the world of comics. The spattered blood across the lettering of the title, as well as the featured blood-stained edges, simulate Tarantino’s themes of graphic violence.
